This little painting was hanging on the wall during a Mayne Island studio tour when a woman stopped, smiled, and said, "Oh, that's the Brick Dock!" without a moment's hesitation. Until then, I hadn't realized I'd painted such a recognizable Mayne Island landmark. I'd simply been painting the shapes, colours, and feeling of the scene. I paint flowers the way they feel to me, wild, messy in the best of ways, and full of colour. Like people, they're much more interesting once they stop behaving how you'd expect, lol. 11x14 acrylic on canvas.

I usually start with a composition in mind, but somewhere along the way the painting starts making its own decisions. In this case it was her arm. It wanted to keep going, right off the canvas. Once I get into that painting zone, I stop trying to control it. I don't think about selling or whether anyone will like it.
